Project Plan
Project Goals
We want to meet teenager orphans where they are. It may be homeless, poor, hungry, forgotten, sick, mistreated or abused. We want to provide a safe environment and family centred home, building on independence and life skills in order to integrate them back into society.
• We aim to meet the needs of orphans who have been deprived of love, care, mental, spiritual and physical needs. Maslow's hierarchy of basic and essential needs for every human is often ignored in Zimbabwe. We want to introduce these back into the lives of many orphans, whether they are living with us, attached to us or at our feeder orphanages.
• We have a vision to see Zimbabwe rebuilt. By training youngsters in simple, but essential, life skills we will begin to see the effects and restore hope in a generation.
• We want to see the future of Zimbabwe achieving the best they can within the education system. However, acknowledging its failure in recent years, because of the political situation, we aim to provide a system of learning that will be suitable for sustaining Zimbabwe.
• To work with orphanages to improve quality of care, help and support each orphan receives, acting as an advocate for them.
• We want to create a model of care and support, which can be readily expanded upon and taken up by others in Zimbabwe in order to expand provision of social care for children and young people.
• Through education, training, support and guidance we want to equip the young people we work to become ambassadors within their communities, so they in-turn can work with other young people to support sexual health initiatives.
Costs
Our target budget for the coming year (August onwards) is £30,000. This includes housing and living costs and will ensure that the project is lifted. We will then need constant sponsorship as a charity to support the teenagers in school, education and work. We will rely on the support of sponsors and donors for material items, volunteers (a programme for volunteers will be set up) and maintenance, housing and living costs. Our staffing will be provided mainly by Zimbabweans, supported and lead by our British project lead. He in turn will be able to call on local support from health and social work professionals in Zimbabwe and professional guidance and support from the British professional advisor. At the moment we are working through the CR Zim funds Charity number: 232670
Age range
Our concern is for those orphans aged 14 20 years. 14 is an age when the government will cut funding if there are living relatives. The aim of this is to cut funding and to decrease the number of orphans in the homes. Not many children are adopted. This is a flaw in the governments system, which has overlooked the welfare, safety and potential for each and every teenage orphan. We do not look at statistics, but rather the individual.
Zimbabwe needs to see the following happen:
•A fall in teenage crime
•A fall in unwanted children, left orphaned
•A drop in teenage HIV/AIDS
•A rise in school attendance and higher education courses
•A fall in teenage orphan homelessness
•A rise in teenage education/course exam and pass rates
•Change in sex education, citizenship, life skills, rebuilding a sustainable Zimbabwe
•A greater interest in essential life skills such as agriculture, citizenship, building, environment and so on
•A greater world wide interest in restoring Zimbabwe, including food aid
This sounds like we need to rebuild the whole of Zimbabwe and start from scratch. We recognise that we cannot change the whole of Zimbabwe, but we believe we can make a difference to the lives of many teenage orphans who are the countrys future.
